Established in Zanesville, Ohio in 1937, Shawnee Pottery was named for an arrowhead found on the grounds of the plant in Zanesville, Ohio in 1937. Presumably of the Shawnee Indian tribe, the arrowhead inspired the name as well as the manufacturing symbol for the pottery.

Shawnee Pottery was built on the former site of the American Encaustic Company, once the largest tileworks in the world. American Encaustic made decorative tiles used on building exteriors around the world from the 1880s to the early 1930s. It also produced interior decorative tiles.

The new Shawnee plant employed some of the same craftsmen that had worked for American Encaustic. Others associated with the Ohio potteries became part of Shawnee. Shawnee?s first president and general officer was A.E. Hull Jr., son of A. E. Hull, founder of Hull Pottery. Shawnee designers included several from Hull, Roseville, Weller, Frankoma, and others. George Rumrill moved the production of his pottery from Red Wing to Shawnee in 1938.

Shawnee Pottery made vases, novelty ware, garden ware, and domestic items such as lamps, cookie jars, and dinnerware in the Corn, Lobster Ware, and Valencia patterns. Other Corn patterns were also manufactured: White Corn pieces were made in 1945, Corn King was made from 1946 to 1954, and Corn Queen, with darker green leaves and lighter colored corn, from 1954 to 1961. Corn King and Corn Queen were originally giveaway premiums for Proctor & Gamble.
