Sharps patent by Tipping & Lawden extra deluxe pepperbox derringer, .30 caliber rimfire, blue finish, ornately scroll-engraved, silver inlayed, double raised carved pearl grips, in brass-bound fancy veneer rosewood case. Serial number “1176”. Derringer shows approximately 20 – 30% original bright blue on barrels, evenly drifting and thinning to a light natural metal patina, with just starting normal aging process. The top of the barrel is silver inlayed with the name Tipping & Lawden surrounded by scrolls with fancy scrolls around muzzle. The frame is elaborately English scroll-engraved matching to the barrels. The grips are finely raised-carved on both sides in a matching floral scroll and checkered motif. The frame shows a rich (honey-colored) patina. The action good and generally very good overall. The original case is lined in blue velveteen in the partition style with engraved hinges, fancy engraved oil bottle, gold-washed cleaning rod and ferrule on screwdriver. The interior of the case is in good to very good condition, with normal fraying at the edges, indentations at contact points, etc. The veneered rosewood exterior shows fancy brass mounts and strapping, some warping, cracking, and aging, but at least good overall. The original to-the-period pearl grips show some small losses and are at least very good. A deluxe Tipping & Lawden of exhibition quality and the only example known to this cataloger with double-raised carved pearl grips. From the Tom Seymour Collection. Est. $3,000 - $6,000.
