Sharps model 1870 Springfield-altered rifle, made from carbine, .50-70 caliber, 35-1/2” barrel, 2nd type, using 1874 lockplate with no provision for pellet primer. Serial #31 on tang and left breech of barrel. ReferFlayderman: 5F-036. The gun remains in good original condition showing a grey patina finish, some traces of case hardening on lock. Metal surfaces show some pitting, erosion, a few marks on the breech block, and some pitting at the edges. There is no lock marking and no barrel marking, just the left side of the frame shows patent marks. The buttplate is clearly marked US. The stocks have been oiled and are good and show a faint trace of a cartouche. The action is good, bore very good. An original to the period cleaning rod is retained. One of only approx. 300 made with the 2nd type lock. Est: $2,500 - $5,000
