Sharps model 1859 Navy rifle mounted for saber bayonet, .52 caliber percussion, 30” barrel, blue and case hardened finish, cartouche wood stocks, stamped above patchbox “USN 1 F A R.”, serial #42117. Refer Sharps Rifles by Sellers. Refer Flayderman 5F-023, which mentions approx. 2,800 made for Navy. The rifle shows 20-40% original blue evenly thinning and toning with some scattered light to moderate erosion and light cleaning long ago. The frame and lock show strong traces of case color, some light cleaning long ago, but still some good colors mixed in, particularly on the lock area. The frame shows some slight to moderate pitting and some slightly heavier pitting of the left side of frame and edges. The stock is very good plus with a few minor dings, mars, a couple gouges and small losses. The buttplate and patchbox show traces of case hardening within their patina. The barrel address and new model 1859 markings are sharp. The sharps patent and new model markings are crisp, the lock markings are sharp and crisp. The action is tight, the interior shows near mint bore that is bright and shiny. The original sling swivels are retained and there is the number “61” stamped
