#161565 made in 1879 per Sharps Original Records (R.L. Moore, Jr.). 28" Round Barrel stamped "Old Reliable" in a clipped corner cartouche, Sharps Rifle CO. Bridgeport Conn., Business 45. Right side of barrel has a small 2’ 10 stamped on it. The left side of barrel has signs of having more than one rear sight as along with current sight there is another dovetail (now filled) cut in the barrel closer to the receiver. Also there are 3 holes (now filled) drilled into the left side of the barrel whose positions form sort of an elongated triangle. These may have been the rear mounts for a long brass scope with the front sight dovetail providing the other point of attachment. All above filled areas appear to have been professionally done. The left side of receiver is stamped "Sharps Rifle CO. Pat April 6, 1869". The right side has no markings. The upper tang of the receiver has been drilled to mount a Creedmore Type Tang Sight. Forward mount of Tang Sight covered part of the serial number 161565. Only 15 was clearly visible, the others very faint due to wear. The forward edge of the stocks comb shows wear from the tang sight being flipped back to rest on it. It has double-set triggers which are correct for this model. Matching serial numbers on the receiver and barrel (underneath forearm). The forearm shows definite pommel wear from being carried across a saddle and is located just behind the front screw of the forearm. This is also the “balance point" for this firearm. An old period chip out of the stock on corner near the receiver’s top left side (serial # area). Approximately only 1604 made of this model. The Sharps was purchased many years ago from Darrel Emmett, an old time gun dealer and collector from Glendive, Montana. This Sharps shows use as definitely having “been there" and is of the type a person wishes “could talk". Action is still working. No FFL Transfer Required.
