Sharps New Model 1863 percussion rifle, .52 cal., 30” barrel, wood stocks, #C,38064. This rifle is in overall good condition showing a dark brown patina on metal surfaces, bore should clean to good, good action, clear markings, three barrel bands, two sling swivels, iron patchbox; scattered moderate pitting on lock plate and patchbox beneath dark patina. This gun is accompanied by a letter dated April 13, 2000 from a well-known Northwest dealer and military collector stating that “Sharps records indicate this rifle serial number C,38064 was actually issued to a soldier by the name of Lawrence Schular (sp), Company C of the 6th Veteran Volunteer infantry”. A copy of the National Archives records for Lorenz Schuler, indicates while serving with Co. A of the 41st NY Infantry, he was captured by the Confederates at Gettysburg, was later held at Richmond, Virginia until paroled at City Point, Virginia on August 2, 1863 at which time he returned to service and eventually moved over to the 6th U.S. Veteran Volunteer Infantry where he remained until the end of the Civil War. An interesting associated Civil War weapon. Est.: $2,000-$4,000.
