Sharps New Model 1863 Metallic Cartridge Conversion Carbine

Post Civil War converted to fire the .50-70 Government center fire cartridge with the six groove barrel. These carbines were completely refurbished by Sharps during the conversion process and if needed the stocks were replaced with ones not having a patch box, which is the case with this example. Brass blade front sight and carbine style folding ladder rear sight graduated to 800 yards. The top of the barrel is marked with the three-line sharps address ahead of the rear sight, "NEW MODEL 1863" at the breech and "E.P.R." on the left rear. The lock is marked with the Sharps and Lawrence patent dates and the left side of the frame is marked with the Sharps patent marking and the serial number on the upper tang. There is a small "C" and "R" sub-inspectors mark on some parts. Mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a saddle ring bar and ring on the left wrist, a clear "EF" cartouche on the left wrist and a clear "DFC" ribbon cartouche on the left side of the stock.

Fine as Arsenal refurbished. The barrel retains 50% blue with the balance a smooth brown patina. The lock shows almost all of the vivid case colors. The receiver retains 40% case colors with a smooth dark patina on the balance. The wood is also very fine with a few minor dents and handling marks. The markings are clear. The action is excellent.
