Manufacturer: Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company Model: New Model 1865
Following the Civil War the U.S. Government decided to convert many percussion military arms to metallic cartridge. These carbines were completely refurbished by Sharps during the conversion process and if needed the stocks were replaced with ones not having a patch box, which is the case with this example. This carbine is chambered for the 50-70 round with the original 6 groove barrel. The top of the barrel is marked with the three line address ahead of the rear sight and "NEW MODEL 1863" at the breech. The left side at the breech is marked with an "F" followed by "EAW". Lawrence patent rear sight and block front sight with blade. The lock is marked with the Sharps and Lawrence patent dates, the right side of the receiver is marked with the two line patent marking and various parts are marked with a single letter inspection mark. Mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with the "DFC" ribbon cartouche on the left side.
BBL: 22 inch round

Gauge: 50-70

Serial Number: C18563
Condition:
Very good as arsenal refurbished at the time of conversion showing a smooth brown patina on the metal surfaces. The wood is good with an old fill repair on the left side of the stock and overall there are some scattered minor dents, dings and chips associated with a military weapon of this age. The markings are readable. The action is excellent.
