Sharps New Model 1863 Carbine with Metallic Cartridge Conversion
Sharps New Model 1863 Civil War Carbine converted under Ordnance Department contract by the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company to the caliber .50-70 center fire cartridge in 1867. The carbine has the 3 groove lined barrel and fitted with the standard Lawrence folding leaf rear sight graduated to 800 yards. The barrel is faintly marked "NEW MODEL 1863" at the breech end and a clear "F" is marked on the left side. The serial number is located on the upper tang. The left side of the receiver is stamped with the two line Sharps 1848 patent date and the lock is stamped with the two line Sharps 1852 patent date and two line Lawrence patent date. The stock has a script "DJC" and "EJ" cartouches with the saddle ring bar with ring on the left side.

Condition: Excellent. The barrel retains 97% plus blue finish showing some mild thinning with some minor muzzle wear and scratches. The frame, hammer, and lever retain 90% of the case colors which are slightly fading to a gray. There are patches of surface pitting present on both sides of the breech. The wood is excellent with some minor dings and scratches. The cartouches are crisp. Mechanically excellent.
