Manufactured by the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Co. of Hartford, Connecticut circa 1862-1863 and subsequently refurbished to new condition at the close of the Civil War. The rifle has a blue barrel, casehardened receiver and furniture with an oil finished walnut stock and forearm. The screws and small components have a fiery niter blue finish. The bottom of the barrel has a lug for a saber bayonet. The barrel has a block mounted nickel silver front sight blade and a R.S. Lawrence patent folding leaf rear sight with a 900 yard center notch. The receiver retains the complete Lawrence pellet primer. The stock has a casehardened patch box and buttplate. The upper receiver tang is stamped with the serial number "57773" and the underside of the barrel is serial numbered "C39394". The ribbon shaped "DFC" final inspection mark used on metallic cartridge conversions of Sharps rifles and carbines is stamped in the center of the left side of the stock. Two horizontal and one vertical Ordnance inspection stamps with script initials and rectangular borders stamped on the left stock wrist. Single letter and multiple initial Ordnance sub-inspection marks are visible on the barrel, forearm, stock and most major components. The top of the barrel is marked with the three line Sharps Hartford address ahead of the rear sight and "NEW MODEL 1863" at the breech. The rear sight base is stamped with the correct "R.S. LAWRENCE" patent marking. The two line Sharps 1848 patent date is stamped on the left side of the receiver.
