Sharps Model 1874 rifle, serial number C54001 originally invoiced May 6th, 1875 to Capt. John Mix of the U.S. Army stationed at Fort Laramie, Wyoming. Originally shipped as sporting rifle in .44 caliber with 30” barrel, double set triggers,open sights and oil finished stocks. The rifle shows a period frontier conversion to extra heavy Davenport barrel and re-calibered to .40 with 2 5/8” case, (40-90). The barrel shows W.C.D. markings and Eagle underneath along with “OldReliable” and “Bridgeport” stamp on top flat along with stamped caliber markings at the breech. The original factory letter to Mr. Bill Gary is included along with a subsequent letter by custodian of Sharps records Dr. Robert L. Moorewho is a noted Sharps historian and expert in which he states that “These Davenport barrels were made after The Sharps Company failed and used by Walter Cooper along with other frontier gunsmiths”. Also Dr. Moore’s letter confirms theidentity and placement of the markings. This rifle weighs slightly under 16 pounds total and shows a gray to brown patina finish with some slight traces of case hardening in the grayish color on the action.
