Sharps Model 1874 Sporting rifle, .45 2-7/8” cal., 30” octagon heavy barrel, blue and case hardened finish, wood stocks, #160889. This gun is in overall good condition showing an untouched frontier look. There are slight traces of muted blue finish on the barrel with the balance gone to a brown patina with scattered areas of erosion, nicks and mars and what appears to be old vise marks on the breech end of the barrel. The frame shows case colors gone to dark patina and a silvery color; the bore is very good, the markings sharp, the set triggers are working at time of description; the action is good; the rear sight is a neat period buckhorn replacement and the front sight is a silver blade. The butt stock shows wear, nicks, mars and a couple slight cracks and is of the carbine variety with the cutout for a saddle ring assembly that was removed long ago. This stock has been with this gun for quite some time as its wear matches that of the fore stock which also shows scattered wear, nicks and mars like the butt stock and displays old losses to both top sides of the fore stock. The lever shows an old well-done repair and the gun is accompanied by a 1995 factory letter from Dr. R. L. Moore, Jr. confirming the caliber, barrel length, double set triggers and weight of 13 pounds, 3 ounces. The letter further notes that the gun was shipped on December 8, 1877, to Schuyler, Hartley and Graham of New York City. The gun is also accompanied by a hand written letter from noted Western Artist and gun collector Fred Fellows indicating that he had obtained the gun from County Sheriff Larry Merical who got the Sharps off a Ranch in Ronan, Montana and that the gun reportedly had belonged to a buffalo hunter who hunted in Eastern Montana and then homesteaded in Ronan. A really great heavy barreled Sharps that has been untouched in recent times and with some great Western history. Est.: $8,000-$12,000.
