Sharps Model 1874 Deluxe Sporting Rifle, .45 2.1” cal., 28” octagon barrel, blue and case hardened finish, checkered deluxe pistol grip wood stocks, #158156. This gun is in overall fine condition showing approx. 80% blue finish on barrel that is unmarked; approx. 75% original case colors on the receiver that is also unmarked; the wood is in very good condition with beautifully checkered stocks, a horn fore end tip and plain brown hard rubber pistol grip cap; there are some scattered mars and scratches to the butt stock but nothing major. The butt plate is the standard Sharps checkered steel, the single trigger has been checkered; the bore is fine, the action crisp. This gun is known to the collector fraternity as it is pictured in Frank Seller’s book on Sharps Firearms, page 223 and was formerly in the Bob Taylor collection. Although a factory letter does not accompany this gun, it reportedly was delivered to Charles Lennox, a stock maker at Sharps Rifle Co., on October 20, 1877 with a notation on “Cooley’s account”. This delivery possibly explains the fancy stock. Further, the gun reportedly was ultimately sold to A. J. Plate in San Francisco, California on July 29, 1878 along with a large group of Hunters rifles. The rear sight is original, the front adjustable wind gauge, although not of Sharp’s manufacture, appears period, the long range tang sight is a quality reproduction. A very interesting fancy Sharps 1874 that has no markings other than its serial number on the receiver. Est.: $10,000-$20,000.
