Sharps Model 1853 slant breech percussion carbine (aka “John Brown Sharps” or “Beecher’s Bibles”) period inscribed “G. C. Eckart”, .52 cal., 21-1/2” round barrel, brass barrel band, brass patchbox and brass butt plate, wood stocks, #16868 on the underside of the barrel, serial number on frame defaced by decoration. This gun is in well-worn but overall good condition showing a light brown patina on the barrel, receiver, lever, long iron saddle ring bar and saddle ring, good bore and action, wood shows considerable wear, scattered nicks, mars and approx. 20 small old filled wood holes (possibly from where tacks had been previously located). This gun is in the proper range of “John Brown Sharps” per a Frank Seller’s letter that comes with this gun and is dated January 27, 2002. He also states that the inscription on the patchbox “is identical to that found on carbines captured at Harper’s Ferry after the John Brown raid”. The barrel band and sling ring are opened by the Seller’s letter to be replacements. An interesting and important Sharps carbine with what appears to be a genuine period inscription. Also included is some preliminary research done on who Eckart might be; further study would be warranted by the successful bidder of this lot. Richard Wolfe Collection. Est.: $1,500-$3,000 +++.
