Sharps Model 1852 Slanting Breech Carbine
Manufactured from 1853 to 1855 with a total production of approximately 5,000. This is the earliest Sharps Model with the distinctive "slanting breech" and is fitted with the lever hinge pin retaining spring mounted on the right rear of the forearm. The breech end of the barrel is marked with the three line Sharps address, the upper tang "C. SHARPS / PATENT / 1848" followed by the serial number and the lock is marked "SHARPS / PATENT / 1852". Matching serial number on the upper tang, primer housing and on the stock inside the patch box. Iron mountings including the patch box, blade front sight and Lawrence patent folding leaf rear sight graduated to 800 yards and mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a sling swivel mounted on the lower tang and front barrel band.

Condition: Very good plus. The barrel retains 40% original blue with the balance a smooth mottled brown patina with a smooth mottled gray patina on the remaining metal surfaces. There are signs of some light cleaning on the receiver. The wood had a coat of varnish applied overall and remains very good with a moderate chip on the underside of the forearm at the breech and a few minor chips in the varnish and dents. The markings are clear. Mechanically excellent.
