Sharps Model 1851 percussion Sporting rifle, .44 cal., 28” round barrel, brass mounts, 44” overall; one of only 400 produced making them one of the rarest of all Sharps production arms, refer Flayderman 5F-004. The gun remains in originalgood condition showing a gray to brown patina finish with some bright original brown on the barrel and with good clear Robbins and Lawrence stamp on the barrel; 1845 patent date visible on tape primer door, other markings very light andonly visible under magnification in this area. The tang is well-marked “C. Sharps patent 1848” with serial #1896. The stock is in good condition with some dings, mars, scratches, a couple of gouges and a small loss at the toe of the butt; otherwise sound overall with good un-cleaned patina on the brass. The original rear sight remains, the front sight is an old replacement in the correct dovetail. The tang is drilled for a sight which is not present. The action is good, the bore is good to very good with some erosion at the breech. A very significant early Sharps of the type pioneers carried West before the Civil War. (Antique).
