Sharps Meacham heavy barrel Sporting rifle, .50 cal., 30” half round/half octagon barrel, blue and case hardened finish, double set triggers, vernier tang sight, hooded front sight, very good plain wood stocks, top barrel flat stamped “J.P. Lower”, #C,46865 on the frame and #156056 on the underside of the barrel and #162042 crossed out under the barrel. The gun shows the majority of its blue finish on the heavy barrel, the receiver shows a couple faint traces of case color with the balance gone to a silvery color and brown patina with a couple of dents and mars to the left side of the receiver; the bore is bright, the markings very good, carbine butt stock with saddle ring base inlet into the left side of the butt stock; double set trigger needs adjustment. This interesting Meacham Sharps was previously in the Gaines de Graffenried collection. Also accompanying this lot is a handwritten letter from noted Sharps authority and owner of the original Sharps factory records, Dr. Richard Labowskie, indicating the receiver cannot be located in the records but that the barrel number was from a Sporting Rifle shipped to H. Folsom & Co., St. Louis on May 20, 1876, .44 cal., 30” octagon barrel, weighing 11 pounds. Further Dr. Labowskie states the crossed out number under the barrel is a blank in the records. A really neat frontier Sharps that certainly could tell quite a story. Est.: $3,000-$6,000.
