This is a Meacham conversion rifle, so called because E.C. Meacham of St. Louis featured them in their catalogs. These rifles were made after the Sharps Rifle Co. ceased production of the Model 1874 and are easily identified by the converted carbine action and stock. Other new parts included the barrel and forearm. The barrel on this rifle is marked "Old Reliable" in an octagonal box followed by "SHARPS RIFLE CO. BRIDGEPORT, CONN." on the top flat ahead of the R.S. Lawrence ladder rear sight and "CAL. 40 2 1/2" on the left flat at the breech. The barrel is renumbered to the action without the "C" prefix. Double set triggers and blade front sight. The sides of the action have the Sharps patent dates with the sling bar hole on the left side filled as part of the conversion, and upper tang drilled and tapped for sight mounting. Schnabel style smooth forearm and smooth straight grip stock with sling bar base on the left side of the wrist.
BBL: 30 inch octagon
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 40-2 1-2
Finish: blue/casehardened

Serial Number: C47993
Condition: Good. The rifle has a smooth gray patina with evidence of being cleaned some time ago. The forearm is fair with a hairline crack and a large chip of wood missing on the left side, along with some minor handling marks and some chipping along the edges. The period revarnished buttstock is good with some minor dings and scratches with a couple dents near the frame (left side). Mechanically fine.
