Sharps & Hankins Second Model Civil War Model 1862 Army Type Carbine
Manufactured circa 1862 to 1865, this is one of only about 500 Model 1862 Army Type carbines made, with approximately 200 ordered by the U.S. Army. These carbines are chambered in 52 rimfire and a few Army Type carbines were made experimentally in other calibers. This particular carbine is absent of any markings other than the serial number on the upper tang. The Army Type defers from the Navy Type in that it lacks the screws and screw holes in the breech end of the barrel for retaining the leather covering. The Second Model has a floating firing pin mounted in the recoil shield rather than the firing pin on the hammer of the First Model. The sliding hammer safety and saddle ring and bar are absent, (saddle rings not always on this model). Blue barrel, period refinished nickel plated receiver, hammer and lever/trigger guard and brass buttplate. Pinched blade front and adjustable rear sights and mounted with a straight grip stock with a sling swivel and brass buttplate.
BBL: 24 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 52 RF
Finish: blue/nickel
Grips:
Serial Number: 1168
Condition: All parts except the barrel have been period nickel plated with most of the dull finish remaining. The barrel has a smooth brown patina. The otherwise good stock is a bit ill-fitting at the receiver and shows a small crack on the upper right wrist and a few scattered minor dings and dents. The action needs work, if the trigger is held forward and the hammer cocked, it with function properly, otherwise the hammer doesn't hold a cock position and the trigger remains back.
