The right side of the receiver is roll-stamped: "SHARPS/&/HANKINS/PHILADA." in four lines and the left side of the receiver is stamped: "SHARPS/PATENT/1859" in three lines. Fine. The black leather protective cover is solid, with wear limited to age cracking and some very minor flaking on the lower edges. The receiver, hammer and lever retain at least 90% of the original casehardened finish with strong mottled case colors. The brass buttplate has a mellow patina. The stock is in excellent condition with raised, 'feathered', grain and only minor handling marks. The markings are crisp. The carbine functions perfectly. This is a very fine example of an important Civil War U.S. Navy firearm.
