According to information supplied by the consignor, this arm was part of an experimental project run by the Springfield Armory for the development of a new cartridge, which included a Sharps & Hankins breechloader chambered for a 44 caliber centerfire multi-ball round, which fired a stack of 3 44 caliber balls at once. (This is supported on pages 170 and 174 of Sharps Firearms by Frank Sellers and Civil War Sharps Carbines & Rifle by Coates & McAulay on pages 34-36). Blade and adjustable notch sights, with "SHARPS/PATENT/1859" on the left side of the frame and "SHARPS/&/HANKINS/PHILADA" on the right. Smooth stock, with a single sling ring on the underside and a smooth brass buttplate.

Condition: Good with a mixed brown patina overall.Bright gray along the high edges and scattered handling marks. Case colors are still visible on the protected areas of the action lever. Stock is good with mild dents and scratches on the wood and brass. Safety has been removed, otherwise mechanically very good.
