Sharps Hankins 1859 Navy Carbine
Sharps & Hankins 1859 single shot, breech loading Navy Carbine. This Sharps and Hankins .52 caliber rim fire rifle, patented in 1859 and originally with a leather wrapped barrel, was used by the Navy. When the trigger guard is pulled down the barrel moves forward in the frame to open the chamber for loading. This was one of the first breechloaders to use self-contained metal cartridges. This example appears to be complete with the exception of the leather barrel cover. There remains a great deal of original blue finish on the barrel and action. The action functions as expected. The left side of receiver is marked "SHARPS PATENT 1859" with P G G stampings which may be inspector markings. The right side is marked "SHARPS & HANKINS PHILADA". The stock has a a crack running from the comb back but is solid. An interesting piece of Naval firearms history that is seldom seen. Antique.
