The Model 1878 is an internal hammer, breech loading single shot rifle produced from 1878 to 1881 with a total production of approximately 6,900 in the military configuration with a number sold to foreign countries. The top of the barrel is marked "Old Reliable" in script and "SHARPS RIFLE CO. BRIDGEPORT. CONN." behind the rear sight, and the left side of the receiver is marked "SHARPS RIFLE CO. BRIDGEPORT CONN." above the serial number and "PAT JFC. 1876". The top of the receiver is marked "J.P. LOWER/DENVER COL". It is equipped with a square base blade front sight/bayonet lug, folding ladder rear sight graduated to 1,000 yards and sliding trigger safety. Smooth forearm with two barrel bands, iron ramrod, and straight grip stock with a checkered iron buttplate. There is a sling swivel mounted on the forward barrel band and underside front of the receiver.

Condition: Good. The rifle has a mottled gray patina with some minor spotting showing traces of original blue finish and case colors in the protected areas. The forearm and buttstock are fair with wood missing around the upper tang, a few hairline cracks, and a number of minor pressure dents and scratches. Mechanically fine.
