Shang period green jade large jade lance head. It dates to circa 14th century BCE and is in excellent condition for its age. The upper third is decorated with tao tieh masks at the facets angles and also circular and linear decorations. There are a few small chips at the facets angles, all less than 0.5 cm. The grooves have cinnabar staining, a sign that this item was used for ritual veneration ceremonies. Length: 17.2" (44 cm.); width: 1.5" (4 cm.). The haft is conical in shape and has an horizontal drilling that secured the attachment to the wooden shaft of the lance. Estimated value: $9000. Provenance: Dr. Veleanu's jade collection, the author of the illustrated collectors' textbook: "Jade, 5000 BC to 1912 AD, Guide to collectors". A similar jade carving is exhibited in the book.
