Pre-Anyang Shang period large green jade carving in shape of W and decorated with tao tieh mask of "smiling type" that is very rare. Above the mask, there are sun rays denoting that this carving was used for ceremonial divination rituals. There is ceremonial chamfering done on left side. Superficial calcification is present of yellowish-white color. It dates to circa 14th century BCE and is in excellent condition for its age. A vertical perforation of typical neolithic fashion on apical extremity allows the use of this ceremonial jade as a pendant. The reverse side is plain. Length: 6.8" (17 cm.); width: 4.3" (11 cm.). Estimated value: $7000. Provenance: Dr. Veleanu's jade collection, the author of the illustrated collectors' textbook: "Jade, 5000 BC to 1912 AD, Guide to collectors".
