Shang period archaic hair ornament made from bronze and central rectangular jade ornament. Without doubt, the Chinese archaic jade hair ornaments are extremely rare as during Shang period, only the imperial house members could display jade ornaments. The hair ornament is round with open back. A long pin fastened the hair and the bronze piece and is still functioning. This pin's handle is in a shape of a dancer holding the hands above the head. 2 facing dragons are on the upper part of the piece and below, a central rectangular celadon white jade is inlaid in the metal. Relief decorations are around the jade and extending laterally up to the 2 perforations of the pin insertion. Green patina and rusty color depositions are on the surface. Dr. Veleanu's collectors' book: "Jade, 5000 BC to 1912 AD, Guide to collectors" exhibits one hair ornament made entirely from jade dating to Western Han dynasty. We are not aware of any hair ornaments illustrated or described prior Zhou dynasty. Size: 7" X 3" (18 cm. X 7.5 cm.). Provenance: Dr. Veleanu's jade collection, the owner of Objets d'Art Uniques Internet store and the author of the illustrated collectors textbook: "Jade, 5000 BC to 1912 AD, Guide to collectors". Estimated value: $15.000.
