This Burmese paper-mâché and lacquer covered head was made in the Shan style of the 18th century. Represented is the head of Buddha Shakyamuni with fine aristocratic facial features. He has a meditative, friendly expression with half-closed eyes, which are accentuated by inlays. The mouth forms a slight smile and the overlong earlobes as well as the deep neck wrinkles illustrate Buddha's grandeur. The head is decorated with distinctive cone-shaped curls and surmounted by a tall, wooden carved ketumala. The head can be mounted on a base (latter day).

The Buddha’s head shows traces of gilding and is in good condition with signs of wear consistent with age. Missing curls, chips and light surface cracks here and there are visible. The height of the head is 45 cm. Mounted the height measures ca. 60 cm. (lvp)
