Seymour & Blair: An Extremely Rare Jugate Ribbon
Seymour & Blair: An Extremely Rare Jugate Ribbon from Their 1868 Candidacy. By 1868 regional political allegiances had formed which would prevail for decades. The Republicans were at that time considered the more "liberal" party, favoring Reconstruction and expanded opportunities for African Americans. The northern Democrats, many of whom had only reluctantly supported the Union cause in the late war, aligned with southern Democrats. Voters in the former Confederate states formed the legendary "Solid South." As soon as federal troops ended Reconstruction by their withdrawal in the late 1870s, southern states would be inhospitable to Republican candidates for nearly a century. Among the tenets of the Democratic party of that era was a general hostility to African Americans, particularly to their active role in electoral politics.

The present ribbon embodies the mood of the time with the slogan "Our motto: This Is A White Man's Country, Let White Men Rule". Only a handful of Seymour & Blair jugate ribbons of any design have survived, and this one is particularly favored by collectors for its bright red, white, and blue coloration and significant slogan. The last example we offered for sale appeared as lot 25441 in our June 7th 2006 American auction. Even with light soiling and "aging" it drew aggressive bidding, and sold well above estimate at $8,365.

The present example would have a roughly comparable appearance, but for various small separations, which required that the ribbon be professionally re-backed to stabilize it. The separations are concentrated in the lower portion, affecting several words in the slogan, as the photo shows. Nonetheless, a very display worthy example of this important jugate ribbon. Dimensions: 2.5" x 5".

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
