In 1858, the year Mint Director J. R. Snowden began wholesale advertising of proof sets to the general public, the first boom in coin collecting began, soon to rival in some people's minds the tulip craze of 1635-37 in the Netherlands, the stimuli being several popular best sellers devoted to the subject. Mint policy appears to have been to make silver dollars in somewhat greater quantity (1858-60 only) than the other denominations in the sets; in earlier years the extras were mostly cents and half cents, and beginning in 1861 it would appear that the silver coins were made in equal numbers, i.e. only in sets, minor coins probably in the same sets only, minor sets from 1865 on in perhaps slightly larger numbers. All 1859 coinage is scarce, since most of the original sets have long since been broken up. This incredible high-quality set, certified and encapsulated by NGC, stands at the forefront of complete sets. While it may have been assembled from individual specimens, there is no doubt that the coins herein are extraordinary for their depth of detail and consistent high quality. We applaud the consignor who had the wherewithal along with the time and patience to assemble this set of 1859 Proofs!
