Seven 16th Century Engravings by Frans Hogenberg
Seven 16th Century Engravings by Frans Hogenberg This lot contains seven engravings removed from a period book by the legendary Frans (Franz) Hogenberg, a painter, engraver and etcher. He was probably a pupil of the cartographer H. Terbruggen in Mechelen, but later worked in Antwerp producing engravings. He travelled to Poitiers in 1560, and to England in 1568. From 1570 he was known to be in Cologne, where he engraved various illustrations and maps. Offered here are seven engravings of 12" x 9" showing what we believe to be various scenes of the battles and sieges which happened in the Netherlands during the Spanish War and the Dutch Inquisition. Each is captioned in German and dated at the bottom, mostly 1561 and 1562. These were likely published in the 1580s as illustrations for a history book. All are in fine condition with only minor wear, soiling and edge roughness. Worthy of further research. Lot:253
