Copy of "Colorado: its Resources, Parks and Prospects as a New Field for Emigration; With an Account of the Trenchara and Costilla Estates in the San Luis Park" by William Blackmore, published in 1869 by Sampson Low, Son, and Marston of London. This excellent historical book acts as a guide to prospective Colorado immigrants, advertising its mining opportunities, railroads, and ample agricultural land. Blackmore, a British lawyer, investor, and ethnologist, took great personal interest in the development of Colorado and New Mexico; aside from his attempts to drive immigration to the area, he was a large investor in the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad, and had significant land holdings in the area. He also took great interest in the Native Americans of the region, and collected a great number of artifacts, often funding survey missions for photographers to document these peoples. He unfortunately took his own life after his investments in the Denver and Rio Grande did not pay off, but was nonetheless a significant figure in the history of the American Southwest.
The book includes a portrait of Colorado governor William Gilpin as a frontispiece; this photograph, which is an original albumen print, is labelled with his name. It also contains an elaborately detailed fold-out map of the "Trenchara and Costilla Estates, forming the Sangre de Christo Grant Situate [sic] in the San Luis Valley, Colorado Territory". Hardback, 217 pages, original cover with gilt text intact, though it appears that the book's spine has been professionally reinforced/rebound. Page with albumen frontispiece is detached from binding, minor tearing on one crease of the map, notable foxing on many pages; otherwise, the book is in very good condition. See photos. 8.75"x11"x.75".
