Early Victorian Carved Rosewood Settee in the Baroque Style. Circa 1850-1870. The tripartite (3 part) backrest has a pierced and scrolled crest with symmetrical ornamentation; the spiral - turned (barley twist) stiles are topped by ring - turned finials. The serpentine arms splay outwardly to match the scrolled ends found in the bottom toe legs. Beautifully carved cabriole legs display a shell and leaf pattern supported by original brass casters. The organic leaf pattern in the muted patterned tapestry compliments the natural forms found in the carving on the front legs and three part back rest. This remarkable settee was part of the collection of furnishings from the Calhoun Mansion in Charleston, SC; restored and furnished by Gedney Howe III in 1976. Purchased from the Neal Auction Company in New Orleans in 2003.
