[Roman Imperial Coinage] Mattingly, Harold, Edward A. Sydenham, C.H.V. Sutherland and R.A.G. Carson [editors]. THE ROMAN IMPERIAL COINAGE. VOLUMES I–IX. London: Spink. Various editions. Nine volumes, as issued in twelve. Publication dates of each volume are as follows: Vol. I, 1948 reprint; Vol. II, 1926 first edition; Vol. III, 1930 first edition; Vol. IV [in three], 1936–49 first editions; Vol. V [in two], 1927–33 first editions; Vol. VI, 1967 first edition; Vol. VII, 1966 first edition; Vol. VIII, 1981 first edition; Vol. IX, 1951 first edition. 8vo, most volumes in original green cloth, gilt, with jackets where issued. Ex-library copies in varying condition with stamps and labels; good to very good. A well-used set of this standard reference (lacking only the final volume, published in 1994), the best overall work covering the entire range of the coinage of the Roman Empire. All but Volume I are first editions. The plates in the first editions are considerably better than those found in the later reprints. Clain-Stefanelli 4056*. Grierson 75. Kroh 70 (five stars): “covers the period 28 BC to 395 AD and it is the current standard reference used by all. This is definitely essential for all collectors.”
