Set of Japanese Armor

Consignor notes date the items in this lot to the 17th century, which is consistent with the overall design. The do (chest protection) is in the "tosei" style, with the main body constructed from riveted iron plates in response to the rise of the matchlock as a major battlefield weapon, with blue cord securing the remaining components, which include a pair of hanging sote shoulder protectors and a set of hanging kusazuri leg protectors. The front of the do is decorated with a gold and silver inlay foil design of a sitting man, with two suspension rings and a brass badge featuring a "crossed eagle feather" mon near the neck. The back is decorated with a set of silver painted untranslated symbols, and equipped with a hinged bracket for a sashimono banner. The helmet (kabuto) is a later style, with the main body constructed from four riveted plates with silver painted dragonfly decoration, a set of 4 hanging neck guard plates and a pair of brass badges on the front, with the same mon seen on the do.

Fair as refurbished. The do shows a brown patina overall, with heavy cracking of the inner lining and some tearing of the cords, including a few detached leg protectors. The helmet is good, with mild handling marks.
