Included here is a matching set of four (4) bentwood walnut Petitt Chairs with their original upholstery, circa 1965, designed by Don Petitt (1925-2003) for Knoll (model 1105). Overall condition is excellent. There is virtually no visible wear to the original upholstery, and only one stain on two of the chairs. Frames are made from solid walnut and seats and seatbacks are made from foam rubber bonded to formed metal and covered in upholstery. They measure 32" high, 22.25" wide, 32" deep and have a seat height of 18". This model is one of Petitt's most important designs, and is shown on page 198 of the Sourcebook of Modern Furniture published by Norton (Third Edition 2005). Petitt studied at the Institute of Design and worked in the office of George Nelson. In 1952 he joined the Knoll design development group where for two years he worked with Harry Bertoia to develop welding fixtures for his metal furniture collection. After assisting Eero Saarinen for three years, he focused on researching and developing laminated and bent wood manufacturing processes which led to the introduction of the 1105 chair in 1965. Outside of Knoll Petitt maintained a successful freelance design business in New York City.
These chairs reside on the Upper West Side of Manhattan ( New York City ) and may be seen by appointment.
