The coins of Valerian I are not uncommon, but he issued very few large sestertii, and those which exist are, therefore, rare and valuable. Typical of Valerian I's sestertii, this coin features a very well executed design on both sides, and yet the coin is not uniformly round. On the reverse appears the letters "S" and "C", which read S(ENATUS) C(ONSULTO), indicating that the value of this coin (in this case, 1/4 of a denarius) was approved by the Roman Senate. Obverse: IMP C P LIC VALERIANVS AVG ("Emperor Cuius Publius Licinius Valerian"), Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right Reverse: VICTORIA AVGG, ("victory of the emperors"); Victory standing left, holding wreath and palm branch. "S C" in exergue. Size: 25 mm. Reference: RIC 177 $150 reserve JC-30101-13
