Famous American WW I Hero Sergeant “Alvin C. York”

ALVIN C. YORK (1887 - 1964). Medal of Honor recipient, American Army Sergeant Who Distinguished Himself Against the Germans and became one of the most decorated soldiers in WW I.

Check Signed, “Sgt. Alvin C. York,” on a personal check, Feb 27, 1930, Pall Mall, TN, (near his home town) 2.75” x 6.5,” Extremely Fine. From the “Farmer and Promoter of The Alvin C. York Agriculural Institute” on light reddish-orange paper, with a wonderful vignette at the left side. Drawn on the Pickett County Bank, made payable to George York (his brother) for $10 and endorsed by George and Earl York in pencil on the reverse. Some of the tiny hole cancellations are far away from the signature, which is otherwise boldly written, long and highly legible. None other than actor Gary Cooper played the role of Sergeant York in the movie titled after his namesake!

Alvin Cullum York (December 13, 1887 – September 2, 1964) was one of the most decorated American soldiers in World War I. He received the Medal of Honor for leading an attack on a German machine gun nest, taking 32 machine guns, killing 28 German soldiers and capturing 132 others. This action occurred during the U.S.-led portion of the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in France, which was part of a broader Allied offensive masterminded by Marshal Ferdinand Foch to breach the Hindenburg line and ultimately force the opposing German forces to capitulate.
