<B>Senufo (Ivory Coast)</B></I><BR>Mask, probably representing a Baboon, <I>Gbon</B></I><BR>Wood, encrustations, fiber<BR>Length: 16 ½ inches Width: 7 ½ inches Depth: 10 inches<BR><BR> This well-shaped mask is an animal head with open jaws and prominent conical teeth; the concave face is bisected by a long nose, with eyes placed inside a curving brow line. Ears appear behind the mouth, and at the top of the head there is a small chameleon with its front legs in relief extending forward, and behind it a small knob. The creature represented is most probably a modified baboon, <I>gbon.</B></I> Worn in Poro rituals of initiations and at funerals, it represents a senior and very powerful and dangerous embodiment of spiritual power. It operates against witches and malevolent bush spirits for the benefit of the human community.<BR>The condition is overall good.<BR><BR>Provenance: H.
