Senufo (Ivory Coast), Male and female figures
Senufo (Côte d'Ivoire)
Male and female figures
Wood with encrusted patina
Height: 4 inches Width: 1 ¼ inches Depth: 1 ¼ inches (each)

These very small, stylized human figures carved standing on bases were housed in the shrines of Senufo diviners (sandogo) and represent spirits of the bush (madebele). Such spirits served as oracles for diviners and both caused and cured a variety of problems such as disease, disruptive social relations, and crop failure. The simplified figures are dynamically posed with proportionately enlarged heads with prognathous jaws, and large hands carved attached to the lower torso and projecting forward. While clearly a pair by the same hand, the female figure has a glistening dark patina whereas the male has a rougher sacrificial surface, including trace remains of feathers. The condition of both is good.

Provenance: H.
