Virginia Mining District, Storey Co., N.T. (printed under title). # 289 for five shares issued to J. R. Gwin on January 20, 1864 in San Francisco. Signed by president T. N. Ward and secretary John Fowler. Not cancelled. Black border and print. Three vignettes: Native American warrior (center), two allegorical women (bottom left) and woman holding scales (bottom right). Red underprint $2,600,000. Printed by Robbins & Co. 25 cent US revenue stamps on the front and reverse; the one on the front has a tied rare stamped John Fowler, Agent, cancel. Deep folds and creases, some separation, toning, hole beneath secretary signature, glue stain from stamp on reverse. The Seneca had at least six assessments at, mostly, $5 per share. Our certificate appeared on two delinquent lists. Sued the Gould & Curry. The Seneca was willing to settle for $500,000 or $8,390,000 today! Notes on the company from local newspapers.
