Senator Charles Sumner Autograph Letter Signed
Senator Charles Sumner Autograph Letter Signed “Charles Sumner”. One page, 5” x 8”, Senate Chamber Washington , January 24, 1861, to James L. Little. The letter reads in part: “We have a special committee, with a majority favorable to an improved tariff, which is instructed to report next Wednesday. Their Bill will probably become a law.” This letter was written during Sumner's tenure as Chairman of the United States Committee on Foreign Relations. Charles Sumner (1811-1874) might be best remembered for the beating he took on the floor of the Senate by South Carolina Congressman Preston Brooks. This note appears to have been hastily written as evidenced by the numerous ink smears, including one which affects his signature. Otherwise the ALS is in very good condition.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
