In 1996, H. N. Semjon, a former master pupil of Georg Baselitz, converted a vacant and listed kiosk in Berlin-Zehlendorf into a piece of art

The former master pupil of Georg Baselitz, H. N. Semjon, converted in 1996 a vacant and listed kiosk in Berlin-Zehlendorf into temporary installation. The temporary artwork at the junction Teltower Damm and Potsdamer Straße was open for visitors for the duration of one month. Semjon exhibited around 250 of his ‘Product Objects’ inside the kiosk, these are original products covered in bleached beeswax. Magazines, sweets and bottles reminded of the initial function of the pavilion. The five photographs of the series, documenting the project at different times of the day, are on offer in our auction.

The photograph is signed verso on the photograph in black pen ‘Kiosk Berlin-Zehlendorf 1996 Signatur (Unikat)’. The frame is verso signed with a hand-written note in ballpen ‘”Kiosk – Tagesansicht”, 1996, Berlin Zehlendorf, Unikatprint (1996), Set of 5 pieces, Signatur, Foto: H.N. Semjon / Silke Helmerdig’, as well as stamped on the lower left margin ‘f.a.s. fine art service’. The mat is verso fivefold stamped with the photographer’s stamp. The photograph is mounted on the upper margin on the mat cardboard. The photograph is in very good condition. The varnished wooden frame displays some soiling but is in very good condition. The photograph measures 25.5 x 30.5 cm and the total dimensions, including the frame, are 48 x 58 cm.

H. N. Semjon (b. 1962)

The former master pupil of Georg Baselitz graduated in 1994 with the master pupil exam – and was popular as a young artist, who strolled in New York on the tracks of Jasper Johns, for his ‘Product Sculptures’. The ‘Product Sculptures’ are original products covered in bleached beeswax that he carves back into their initial shape. In New York, Chicago, Cologne, Paris and Berlin he was exhibited and traded by reputable gallery owners. Back in Europe, not to waste energies, he became a gallery owner himself in 2001 and founded the Galerie Semjon Contemporary in Berlin Mitte with the exhibition space ‘Kioskshop’. The artist lives and works in Berlin. (tm)
