Seminole Indian Woven Sweetgrass Doublet c. 1900s-
Featured in this lot is this Seminole Indian woven sweetgrass doublet circa 1900 to 1940's. The doublet shows a wonderfully and professionally crafted sweetgrass construction that shows a half doublet design with a open center piece with unique weaving to the shirt. The earliest examples are cane. Palmetto replaced cane after the ancestors of today's Seminole and Miccosukee tribes migrated south from Georgia and Alabama into Florida in the late 18th century. Today most Seminole and Miccosukee baskets are made from sweetgrass. The condition of this grass shirt is good with some wear to the arm areas of the shirt but otherwise shows good overall condition. The measurements of this grass over shirt is 20" x 31" x 3".
