Seleucid Kingdom. Seleukos I Nikator, 312-280 BC
<Our item number 97852>Seleucid Kingdom. Seleukos I Nikator, 312-280 BC. Fouree AR Tetradrachm (14.73 g), Susa mint, struck c. 305/304-295 BC. Seleucus I Nicator (312-281 BC). Head of hero right (assimilating Seleucus, Alexander, and Dionysus), wearing helmet covered with panther skin and adorned with bull's ear and horns, panther or lion skin at neck. Reverse: Nike standing right, crowning trophy, PA (retrograde) in lower left field, AX between Nike and trophy, PD monogram in lower right field. Cf. SC 173.12-15. Perhaps from ESMS die A8. Light hairline scratches in obverse field; splits to silver plating along part of edge. Otherwise, perfectly centered on very round flan. Artistic toning. Most interesting example of this desirable issue. Extremely Fine. Rare!!!
Estimated Value $3,000-4,000.
This remarkable item may be an ancient forgery rather than aproduct of the Susa mint. It conflates the controls of at least two official issues (the AP and PD monogram occur together on SC 173.15, while the control AX appears on several preceding issues). The retrograde P tends to argue against its being an official issue, but the style is very fine. If this piece is in fact an official issue, it would fall between SC 173.14 and 173.15. It appears to have been struck from an official obverse die, but perhaps one belonging to an earlier phase of the trophy coinage.

Our item number 97852
<IMAGES>

</IMAGES>
