Secretary of the Treasury Alexander J. Dallas Autograph Letter Signed “A. J. Dallas”. One page, 7.75” x 8”, Washington, September 18, 1816, to Thomas Leiper, Chairman of the Democratic Conferees, Philadelphia. Alexander James Dallas (1759-1815) served as Treasury Secretary under President James Monroe. An interesting letter in which Dallas declines to become a candidate for Congress. It reads in part: “It appears that the Democratic Conferees of the first Congressional District, have placed me on their ticket of Candidates for the approaching election. Be so good as to express my best thanks…and to inform them, that as the acceptance of a seat in Congress would be incompatible with the arrangement which I have made for resuming the practice of my profession, I must respectfully decline being a candidate for that honor.” A large portion of the integral address leaf is missing but the loss doesn't affect the text of the address. The paper is toned with age, slightly stained, else bright, legible and in very good condition. Comes with a clipped Dallas signature, “A. J. Dallas”, 3” x 1.25” mounted to a stiff paper backing, signature faded but legible, else very good.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
