Large and important Han pottery figure, 14" tall, 9-1/4" wide and about 4" deep. He would have been made to accompany the aristocratic deceased into the next world and aid in his transition to the afterlife. Nicely modeled grey clay body which has a pigmented slip covering which likely turned from white to buff-color in the firing. The figure is kneeling in meditation, robed, and having an interesting hat and cloth covering that continues down his back. His hands emerge from the sleeves of his robe and red cinnabar is seen nearby, suggesting he is holding something of importance (hidden by the hands covering it). Two spiritual attributes, ill-defined, are at the sides of his arms and foretell their common use in later Buddhist sculpture. An impressive sculpture whose importance cannot be overstated.
