Searchlight, Nevada Stock Certificate Group
Three different company certificates from Searchlight issued between 1907 and 1910. Set of 3: 1) Duplex Extension Mining Company of Searchlight, Nevada, issued in 1910 to B.M. Blythe for 100,000 shares at $1 each as signed by Blythe as president. This was 10% of the authorized shares. The Duplex Extension mine was located next to the John Brockman mine. Mineral Wealth in 1906 reported that the company had encountered bunches of ore on the Regal and East Side claims carrying value in gold and galena. Mythical figure riding a wheel with wings holding two flares. 2) Philadelphia-Searchlight Gold and Copper Mining Company, issued in 1907 to Herbert Wheeler for 100 shares at $100 each. Signed by John C. Groom as president and James M. Stewart as secretary. The company held 23 claims in the Sunrise district, 4 mi. ne of Searchlight. Was employing 15 men in 1908 (Copper Handbook). 3) Quartette Extension Gold Mines Company, issued in 1908 for 100 shares at $1 each to Wm. F. Gordon. Signed by C.E. Nelson as president and Edwin L. Browne as secretary. Three mining vignettes. All three certificates are uncancelled. The searchlight district was organized in 1898 after G.F. Colton exposed a gold vein. Colton found more gold several hundred yards east and it assayed as high as $2,900 per ton (Paher). The district peaked in 1907. According to Paher, many prominent Las Vegans made their start here. The Quartette was the principal producer, producing over $2.2 million between 1898 and 1911, while the Duplex Mining Co. mined more than $1 million. VF.
