Searchlight,NV - Lincoln County - c1907 - Quartette Mill Photograph :
Profile of a Quartette Mill and Lodgings. Photograph measures 6 3/4”x4 7/8”, Black single matte with black border 9”x7”--lower left hand corner of the matte has lost integrity but appears stable, high contrast, and focus is sharp—very sharp. The mountains in the background are washed out, but the view is very expansive. There are a couple of minor spots on the photo. Photographer not identified. Great photo of the Quartette Mill near Searchlight. Searchlight is located on US 95 midway between Las Vegas and Laughlin. The Quartette Mining Company was established in 1900, following the discovery of gold by G.F. Colton in 1897. The Mill, located on the Colorado River, was connected to the mine in 1902 when a sixteen mile rail was built. Searchlight boomed in 1902, reached top production in 1907, and continued production into the 1940s. Though production was drastically reduced by 1911. Paher tells us that the Quartette Mill in the photograph was, “Searchlight’s principal producer; from its mine came $2.2 million between 1898 and 1911—almost half the district’s total production. This mill [in the photograph], built in 1903, was one of the first in Nevada to use the cyanide process extensively” (Nevada Ghost Towns and Mining Camps).
