The sitter, Seamus Beag O Lubhaing (d. 1947), colloquially known as "Seamus Beag", was a famous storyteller, raconteur, wit and Irish language exponent. He lived in Baile An Ghleanna, Dún Chaoin, Co. Kerry, all his life and was a subsistence farmer/fisherman. In spite of the given title on reverse, O Lubhaing was not in fact Blasket Islander, but a regular visitor to the island. It appears however, that his father-in-law, a Patrick Guiheen (Pádraig Ó Guithin), was born on the Great Blasket. He was a regular visitor to Peig Sayers's house in Baile Bhiocaire, Dún Chaoin (after she left the island) and they often traded anecdotes and folk stories. Ó Lubhaing's stories were recorded by the famous folklorist, Dr. Seosamh Ó Dálaigh and linguist, Dr. Heinrich Wagner and he was an acquaintance of the late Uachtáran na hÉireann, Cearbhall Uasal Ó Dálaigh. Some of the sitter's stories can be found in the collection of the Irish National Folklore Collection repository, University College Dublin.
We are grateful to the sitter's grandson, Micheal de Mordha, for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.
