This is a seal of the Proton rocket which was painted by Andora and flew into the space afterwards. The seal consists of an aluminum part, which is numbered, and of a red band of synthetic fiber that bears Andora’s stamp. This kind of seal is used for the security of certain technical mechanisms of the Proton rocket, which are removed before the launch. The Proton is a Russian carrier rocket, which is used since the sixties for the launch of heavy payloads and geostationary satellites as well as interplanetary orbiters. The German artist was commissioned by the Russian aerospace to paint the Proton rocket in 1992. Andora is the only artist to this present day whose art is orbiting the earth in space.
The seal is in good used condition. The dimensions are 3.2 x 21 cm.
Andora (b. 1958)
Grown up as Andreas Hoge in Berlin-East, in the course of his career the artist, pop art painter and cosmonaut put on the pseudonym Andora. Accused of preparing for the flight from the GDR, he was expatriated to Berlin-West. He studied social education from 1980 until 1984. Afterwards, he started creating his first paintings that were of neo-expressionist manner. Later, conceptual installations and video techniques succeeded. Andora left the traditional canvas as a painting surface in the 90s and entered the three-dimensional reality with his pictorial language of bizarre creatures of a comic-like world and painted everyday objects. He accepted various commissions by large corporations, for example by WEST. This culminated in painting a Russian Proton rocket, which was then shot into space. Today, Andora lives and works in Berlin.
